Sam didn’t think
things could get worse at Thurmond rehabilitation camp. Then the Reds arrive.
Everyone assumed the kids with firepower had been killed years ago. Instead
they were taken away, brainwashed, and returned as terrifyingly effective
guards. To her horror, Sam recognizes one of them: Lucas, the one spark of
light in Sam’s dark childhood. Lucas has a deadly secret–he beat the brutal
training that turned his fellow Reds into mindless drones. When Sam defends
herself against an attack by a vile PSF guard and faces a harrowing punishment,
Lucas must risk his everything to save her. –goodreads.com summery

This novella was AMAZING! Alexandra
Bracken’s writing is just so amazing; it sucks you in on the first page and
doesn’t let you go until the last word of the last page. Oh and it might break
your heart a little along the way.
Things I Liked
Um can I say EVERYTHING! But I guess I
should be a little more specific than that so let’s start by talking about the
characters and how I fell in love with them almost INSTANTLY! I loved learning
more about Sam: her past and what happened to her after The Darkest Minds. I also fell in love with Lucas. AHHH Lucas!!!
Bracken has a way of making you fall in love with characters within PAGES! I
fell in love with Lucas from the second you saw him. And when you read from his
POV you just feel so bad for him and you sympathize for this sad, poor boy
that’s been through so much. Lucas’s POV also shows you just how messed up this
world is. This world is probably one of the most terrifying dystopian worlds I
have ever read about and it’s because Bracken develops this world so well. She
takes her time developing the world and, through the novellas, she shows you
the world through other people’s eyes, not just Ruby’s. And the last thing I
have to talk about is, the emotions that Bracken makes you feel. Bracken sends
you on a roller coaster of emotions in the book and it’s only 110 pages long!
That’s amazing! Okay so I guess I should stop raving about this book… Y’all are
probably sick of my rambling about this novella by now. Unless you aren’t and
you want to see a more inept discussion, my spoiler review will be up on my
YouTube soon!)
Things I Didn’t Like
HA! You really thought there were gonna
be negatives… nah! This novella was too amazing! Go read it now! :)
Overall
Overall, I LOVED this novella! It
surpassed my expectations and I recommend it for EVERYONE! (But please read the
first books in the series first! :)
Have you read Sparks Rise or any of The Darkest Minds books? What did you
think?
