THE DARK AT THE END Interview
with Susan Adrian
Tell us a bit
about yourself!
By day I'm a scientific editor. I edit other people's words, do layout of reports and publications, do marketing and publicity, and manage a staff. I live with my husband and daughter in Montana, and get to do all the full-time mom stuff too! I write in the early mornings and on weekends, and am part of a great, supportive community of YA and MG authors. Short answer: I keep busy.
What's the
publication story of THE DARK AT THE END?
TUNNEL VISION came out in January of 2015 and did really well, but for various reasons, as is quite common, the publisher didn't pick up the sequel. However, I left the ending of TUNNEL VISION a bit ambiguous on purpose, and I definitely had an ending I wanted for Jake and his family and friends. It was important to me to get that story out to the readers who enjoyed TUNNEL VISION. Since THE DARK AT THE END was already drafted, I did the rest of the work and released it myself!
Tell us about
that cover. It's so dark and ominous!
I'm so proud of that cover. I designed it myself, with some help from my fabulous agent, Kate Schafer Testerman. When I saw that photo, I just knew that was IT. It was absolutely Jake, staring into what should be the light at the end of the tunnel and wondering how it still went wrong. And the font fit perfectly too.
TUNNEL VISION is
a twisty thriller, with lots of surprises. Are there any surprises in DARK?
Of course! I can't resist twists. And surprise deaths (whoops). And surprise characters, who shake up everything you knew before….THE DARK AT THE END also has a little more romance, since Rachel is in it a lot more. Though she and Jake still don't have an easy time!
What's your
favorite part of the book?
The ending! No question. That's the ending I had in mind since the very beginning, and I'm so, so glad I got to get it out there for readers. I hope you like it too!
